SUMMARY:Eurochannel's 8th Short Films Program 1 - 1pm
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance Francaise of NW CT is once again co-sponsoring with the Southbury Film Commission Eurochannel’s eighth edition Short Films Tour called “Happiness for the World to See” featuring this year’s theme: Happiness. \nViewers will be introduced to cinematic adventures from the most charming countries such as France\, the United Kingdom and Italy. Plenty of places to go\, plenty of stories to enjoy… We propose only one question: how happy are you? \nHappiness for the world to see \n“Happiness depends upon ourselves\,” said Aristotle. But while philosophers and religious thinkers often define happiness in terms of living a good life\, or flourishing\, rather than simply as an emotion\, scientists have a more pragmatic approach with measurable indicators.\nScientists argue that experiencing positive events\, feeling loved and loving\, accepting others and being accepted\, and keeping good habits lead to finding happiness. Although it is true that an exact and complete definition of “happiness” is impossible\, we can agree that it resides in a sense of well-being rather than wealth or power. But what makes some people happy might not make others happy. \nThe Eurochannel Short Films Tour has been a successful Eurochannel trademark for the last seven years. A unique event\, the tour invites viewers to follow talented directors on an exciting exploration of Europe through short films: with the directors as guides\, viewers discover fascinating cultures through the eyes of a filmmaker. Almost every European country and region is represented in this edition of the Eurochannel Short Films Tour – each of whose film is broadcast in its original language and subtitled in English – which is an example of the program’s creativity and dynamism. Brief discussions will be held between films to give time to the audience to give their reaction and ask questions. \nToday’s six shorts will be from Program 1: “Stuck in Love” and represent the countries listed below: \nPROGRAM 1: “STUCK IN LOVE”\n \nBastille Day (14 Juillet\, 2015)    France (Paris) Drama\, Romance 7 min. \nBravoman (Bravoman\, 2016)       Russia (Saint Petersburg) Comedy 18 min \nThe Jacket (Die Jacke\, 2014)      Austria Drama 9 min \nThe Love That Could Not Be Hidden (El amor que no podía ocultarse\, 2014)    Spain Comedy\, Musical 10 min \nParallel (Parallèle\, 2012)  France (Paris)   Drama 3 min \nAlmost Perfect (Gandrīz Ideāli\, 2014)   Latvia Drama\, Romance 14 min \nALL PROGRAMS ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC WITH A SUGGESTED DONATION OF $5. Please RSVP by calling 203-707-0710 with your name and the number of people attending as seating is limited. \nThe Southbury Film Commission is a sub-commission of the Southbury Economic Development Commission and has as its mission to market the town of Southbury as a filming destination by promoting local professionals and support. The Southbury Film Commission welcomes volunteers\, either as members or just helping with particular tasks. For more information visit their website at www.southburyfilm.org or contact the SFC Chair at southburyfilm@southbury-ct.gov.\nAll the Europe you love is on Eurochannel! SUMMARY:Venue Change! Morris French Disc Group - 6pm
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE!!!!  The Morris area French Discussion group will meet AT THE LITCHFIELD OLIVER WOLCOTT on Thursday\, January 19 starting at 6:00 pm at the offices of Harvest Moon Timber Frame\, LLC located at 198 East Street* in Morris (see Google Map below.)  Led by a French native\, previous discussion subjects have featured le Ricard\, l’attentat à Nice\, Truffaut interviews of Alfred Hitchcock\, les parapluies de Cherbourg\, the origin of Le Père Noël\, Bic pens\, Roquefort cheese\, Le Beaujolais Nouveau…. \nWhether you are just learning French or are an advanced speaker\, you are welcome to join. You will have an opportunity to learn\, practice\, and improve your French language skills at these informal meetings. Due to the shorter time\, this month’s discussion will be short and informal. \n\nOur group will then move to listen to the special Author’s Talk at 7:00pm (see details below) \nLooking for The Stranger:\nAlbert Camus & the Life of a Literary Classic\nwith Author Alice Kaplan\nClick Here to Register \nAlbert Camus’s L’Etranger has been a best-seller for so long that we forget it was ever anything else. But literary classics are made\, not born: though The Stranger was a book very few readers understood or appreciated when it was published in 1942\, it became a household name – a regular on lists of the great books of the 20th century. \nAlice Kaplan delved into publishers’ archives to uncover a key episode in L’Etranger’s career:  the first translation of the French novel into English\, in the United States and in England\, four years after its publication in 1946\, when the war in Europe had been over for only a year. This is a tale of two cities\, involving an author\, his publishers\, his translator\, and his readers and reviewers. Knowledge of French is welcome but absolutely not required! \nAlice Kaplan\, John M. Musser Professor of French at Yale University\, is a specialist of 20th century France. She works at the intersection of literature and history\, using a method that allies archivalresearch with textual analysis. A literary translator\, Kaplan serves on the newly created advisory board of the National Book Foundation’s study of the state of translation in the United States. She is a former Guggenheim Fellow\, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, and a recipient of the French Légion d’Honneur as well the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in History for The Collaborator and the Henry Adams Prize for The Interpreter. \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED\nA Wine & Cheese Reception Will Follow\nThe Hickory Stick Bookshop will provide books for sale & signing. \n\nAFNWCT Members attend for free; A suggested donation of $5 is requested from others.

So far\, the weather forecast is good\, with no precipitation anticipated 🙂 \nThe title of the current selection is “Lutetia” by Pierre Assouline and the group will continue their reading starting on page 74 at the paragraph that begins: “Cet homme là-bas\, par example.” \n \nUne revue du livre:\n“I loved this book; it is long; but every page contains a drop of history which we can view through the prism of the Hotel Lutetia. While not exactly a history book\, I suppose one could call it a “roman cle” since most of the characters and certainly the principal events described are non-fictional. A beautifully written account of the intrigues (and tragedies) of the German occupation. Think of “Remains of the Day” only this is far more poignant and powerful since the Hotel was the headquarters for the Nationalist Socialist Intelligence Agency and the action unfolds in the heart of Nazi-occupied Paris. Very powerful narrative and an unexpected climax approaching the end of the novel. Please read it. It won’t disappoint.”\n\nIf you have any questions\, please let Amanda know at lecture@afnwct.org.\n\nAFNWCT Members attend for free; A suggested donation of $5 is requested from others. \nQuestions or comments?
