SUMMARY:Using Cinema in the Classroom - Teacher Workshop - 10:30 am
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 2\, in collaboration with the CT Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF)\, the AFNWCT has invited professor Anne-Christine Rice of Tufts University in Boston to present a workshop titled: “La Grande Guerre: du cinéma à la salle de classe.” This workshop will discuss how even difficult relevant cultural topics\, such as WWI\, can be easily introduced into the classroom through the use of films such as the movie “Joyeux Noel” (PG-13). This workshop will give French teachers three levels of activities (depending on the level of the students) that they can take away and use immediately. \nRegistration starts at 10:30\, run through lunch and finish around 1:30 pm. \nFor the last 19 years Anne-Christine Rice has  developed an innovative method that places film at the core of the French language experience. Films are the springboard for class discussions\, language acquisition and cultural awareness.\nHer first textbook\, “Cinema for French Conversation”\, now in its 4th edition\, established a series that includes Spanish\, German\, Italian\, Russian and Portuguese. Her latest textbook\, “La France contemporaine à travers ses films”\, continues to leverage film to explore present-day French culture and society. What started as an innovation in 2000 is now the standard. \nThe cost of this workshop is $25 for members of AATF or AFNWCT. $35 for non members and includes lunch. \nClick HERE to sign up through the website of the CT Chapter of AATF.

DESCRIPTION:Meeting on the first Thursday of each month\, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm\, participants take turns reading out loud French classic authors and enjoy hearing and sharing the richness of the French language. March’s meeting is on the 3rd at the AF Center in Southbury. \nThe group expects to finish their previous book so their next book is entitled “Le grand Coeur” by Jean Christophe Rufin. SUMMARY:Groupe de Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Meeting on the first Thursday of each month\, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm\, participants take turns reading out loud French classic authors and enjoy hearing and sharing the richness of the French language. February’s meeting is on the 4th at the AF Center in Southbury. \nThe current book is entitled “Dans le café de la jeunesse perdue” by Patrick Mondiano\, a Nobel and Prix Goncourt winner. \n“Dans le Cafe de la jeunesse perdue” is the story of Roland\, a young man with literary aspirations\, and an aloof beauty\, variously called Jacqueline and Louki. The pair wander though Paris in the early 1960s in search of the parents they never had. The style of the book will be familiar to Modiano readers: here again we have a combination of geographical precision and chronological vagueness. Every event is pinpointed to a location (usually Paris) with the scrupulousness of a police report. But every area described is also imbued with layers of emotion – and this is where the creative blurring begins. In this book the Montmartre-Pigalle district\, where Jacqueline grew up and met shady types during regular nightly escapes as a teenager\, conjures up a clear sense of threat. The Latin quarter is a refuge where she can start afresh under a new name.\n\nCopies of the book may be ordered at Amazon at prices ranging from $4.43 upwards. You’ll want to hurry to order them as Prime shipping is not available for this book. Also\, since most of the vendors are in Europe\, longer delivery times and expedited international shipping rates can be anticipated. \nIf you would like help in ordering the book\, please let Amanda know asap at lecture@afnwct.org and she will be happy to oblige.\n\nAFNWCT Members attend for free; A suggested donation of $5 for others. \nQuestions or comments?
