SUMMARY:Groupe de Lecture - 6:30pm
DESCRIPTION:Meeting on the first Thursday of each month\, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm\, participants take turns reading out loud French classic authors and enjoy hearing and sharing the richness of the French language. March’s meeting is on the 3rd at the AF Center in Southbury. \nThe group expects to finish their previous book so their next book is entitled “Le grand Coeur” by Jean Christophe Rufin. Based on a true story\, it’s about the fascinating life of Jacques Coeur\, an entrepreneur of humble origins who rose to become an advisor to King Charles VII of France. \nSince most copies need to be ordered from Europe\, they will take several weeks to arrive here and so it is suggested that you order yours as soon as possible. The most reasonably priced copies are at Amazon\, with prices beginning at $9.08\, plus shipping. There are also used copies available that are slightly cheaper. You can find the book at this link. Once there\, click on your choice of Used or New under the heading of Mass Market Paperback:\n\nhttp://www.amazon.com/Grand-Coeur-French-Jean-Christophe-Rufin/dp/2070456153/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1453482975&sr=1-1&keywords=Le+Grand+Coeur+Jean+Christophe+Rufin\n\nIf you would like help in ordering the book\, please let Amanda know by next Tuesday\, January 26th. at lecture@afnwct.org and she will be happy to oblige.\n\nAFNWCT Members attend for free; A suggested donation of $5 for others. \nQuestions or comments? SUMMARY:Cancelled - Due to Weather Wednesday Cine-Club
DESCRIPTION:Postponed until March – Due to weather – \nCome watch the ending of this classic American movie “Gigi”  – we’ll play it in French with English subtitles. \nGaston (Louis Jourdan) is a restless Parisian playboy who moves from one mistress to another\, while also spending time with Gigi (Leslie Caron)\, a precocious younger friend learning the ways of high society. The platonic relationship between Gaston and Gigi changes\, however\, when she matures\, but the possibility of something lasting seems unlikely since he won’t commit to one woman. Gigi refuses to be anyone’s mistress\, however\, and Gaston must choose between her and his carefree lifestyle. \nAmenez votre déjeuner et venez regarder le film avec nous. \nThis program is free for AFNWCT members and students. \nRSVP is kindly requested by calling (203) 707-0710.

SUMMARY:Groupe de Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Meeting on the first Thursday of each month\, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm\, participants take turns reading out loud French classic authors and enjoy hearing and sharing the richness of the French language. February’s meeting is on the 4th at the AF Center in Southbury. \nThe current book is entitled “Dans le café de la jeunesse perdue” by Patrick Mondiano\, a Nobel and Prix Goncourt winner. \n“Dans le Cafe de la jeunesse perdue” is the story of Roland\, a young man with literary aspirations\, and an aloof beauty\, variously called Jacqueline and Louki. The pair wander though Paris in the early 1960s in search of the parents they never had. The style of the book will be familiar to Modiano readers: here again we have a combination of geographical precision and chronological vagueness. Every event is pinpointed to a location (usually Paris) with the scrupulousness of a police report. But every area described is also imbued with layers of emotion – and this is where the creative blurring begins. In this book the Montmartre-Pigalle district\, where Jacqueline grew up and met shady types during regular nightly escapes as a teenager\, conjures up a clear sense of threat. The Latin quarter is a refuge where she can start afresh under a new name.\n\nCopies of the book may be ordered at Amazon at prices ranging from $4.43 upwards. You’ll want to hurry to order them as Prime shipping is not available for this book. Also\, since most of the vendors are in Europe\, longer delivery times and expedited international shipping rates can be anticipated. \nIf you would like help in ordering the book\, please let Amanda know asap at lecture@afnwct.org and she will be happy to oblige.\n\nAFNWCT Members attend for free; A suggested donation of $5 for others. \nQuestions or comments? SUMMARY:Groupe de Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Meeting on the first Thursday of each month\, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm\, participants take turns reading out loud French classic authors and enjoy hearing and sharing the richness of the French language. January’s meeting is on the 7th at the AF Center in Southbury. \nOur new book is entitled “Dans le café de la jeunesse perdue” by Patrick Mondiano\, a Nobel and Prix Goncourt winner. \nDans le Cafe de la jeunesse perdue is the story of Roland\, a young man with literary aspirations\, and an aloof beauty\, variously called Jacqueline and Louki. The Latin quarter is a refuge where she can start afresh under a new name.\n \nIMPORTANT: If you will please let me (Amanda) know asap at lecture@afnwct.org that you will be attending on January 7th\, I will bring enough copies of the first several pages of the book with me for each of you. This is because\, although 25 “Mass Market Paperback” copies of the book are marked to be available on Amazon at prices ranging from $4.43 upwards\, they will unfortunately not arrive in time for our first meeting. (If you are familiar with Amazon\, Prime shipping is not available for this book. Also\, since most of the vendors are in Europe\, longer delivery times and expedited international shipping rates can be anticipated.)\n \nIf you would like my help in ordering the book\, you can let me know on January 7th and I would be happy to oblige.\nAFNWCT Members attend for free; A suggested donation of $5 for others. \nQuestions or comments?
