SUMMARY:Tale of 2 Cities - 7pm
DESCRIPTION:Associate Professor of History\, Judith Meyer will present “Voices from the Past: A Tale of Two French Communities” at 7pm on Friday\, June 19 at the AF Center in Southbury. This presentation (in English) will take a close look at how and why the French city of La Rochelle became a bastion of French Protestantism in the 16th century\, in order to shed light on the extraordinary appeal of the Reformation. Then a close look at the small town of Courthézon in the south of France in the early 17th century will offer insights into how the Protestant minority in the town managed to coexist with the majority Catholic populace and still uphold the integrity of their own faith. \nLight refreshments will be served following the presentation. Admission is $10 (Free for AFNWCT Members). SUMMARY:La Poésie: la Langue de l’Amour\, 7pm
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate national poetry month with original poetry written by Brian Denyer. From humorous to inspirational poetry\, this program begins with Brian’s verse response to the French classic poets (e.g. du Bellay\, La Fontaine\, Moliere) and will include his commentary on the poetic attitudes of the time period. Moving forward onto the more modern forms\, Brian’s poetry will imitate the styles of Baudelaire and Paul Valery.  To conclude\, participants will create an original group poem\, in French. Hand-outs of the selected poetry using a parallel text translation will be available. This event is open to the public.
