DESCRIPTION:  \nThe group’s meeting location is in the Red Barn located at the Audubon Center Bent of the River\,\, Southbury\, CT 06488 Audubon tel: 203-264-5098.  (See Google map.)  Dates: June 6 & 20\, July 11 & 25\, and August 11 & 25.  \nWhat a beautiful setting for reading French literature!  There is a parking lot near the Center’s entrance.  One can park there and follow a short path to the Red Barn.  Those who find walking difficult  will be transported to the site by car.   \nTogether\, reading aloud and discussing the text\, this group meets twice a month on Saturdays (replacing Cafe Conversation). This summer’s novel will be Le Testament francais by Adrei Makine. \nChairperson\, Kathryn MacCullough\, will be ordering from Cecile Cohen of Yale Book Store the French version for ~$13.95 or those who also want the English version\, it will be ~$14.95. Priority access given to school groups during the first hour. \nCommunity Heritage Village\nHermione shipbuilding and colonial crafts demonstrations. 18th century Military drills and demonstrations; 18th c military encampment; Navy Band (schedule TBD).\n10:00am – 4:00pm \nAlliance Francaise of Providence \nThe ship Hermione is now sailing through the Atlantic and will be in Newport\, RI on July 8th and July 9th.  A number of events will be organized during those 2 days. The Alliance Francaise of Providence is part of that effort. One of the main events will be a luncheon on Wednesday July 8th from 11:00 to 3:00 at the Ocean Cliff resort. The place overlooks the entrance to Newport Harbor so the ship will be seen when it enters the bay at 2:00 pm. The luncheon will be a sit down buffet style. There will be music and a number of dignitaries are expected for that occasion. The individual price of the tickets is $45.00\, drinks are cash bar. Tables of 10 can be purchased for $500.00. DESCRIPTION:Hermione: “La Mise à Flot de la Coque” \nFree Showing\, Friday\, 7pm\, June 26 at our AF Center \nThis DVD portrays the splendid celebrations held in Rochefort\, France when the almost finished reconstructed “Hermione” first touches the waters. \nOn March 19\, 1780\, the original Hermione left Rochefort\, carrying General Lafayette and a strong force of French soldiers who played an instrumental role in the Battle of Yorktown\, where they joined General Washington’s troops to blockade the British\, leading to the eventual surrender of English General Cornwallis. \nNow\, after 20 years of preparations\, Hermione has returned to the USA.  Local dockings and tours will be held in New York\, NY (July 2-4) and in Newport R.I. DESCRIPTION:Associate Professor of History\, Judith Meyer will present “Voices from the Past: A Tale of Two French Communities” at 7pm on Friday\, June 19 at the AF Center in Southbury. This presentation (in English) will take a close look at how and why the French city of La Rochelle became a bastion of French Protestantism in the 16th century\, in order to shed light on the extraordinary appeal of the Reformation. Then a close look at the small town of Courthézon in the south of France in the early 17th century will offer insights into how the Protestant minority in the town managed to coexist with the majority Catholic populace and still uphold the integrity of their own faith. \nLight refreshments will be served following the presentation.
