This film starring Juliette Binoche in a haunting and beautifully photographed film, is set in the 1840s in the French departement of Saint-Pierre, off the Canadian North Atlantic coast. A convict is sentenced to death for a drunken murder, and strives to atone and redeem himself while the island awaits the arrival of a guillotine to carry out the execution. (1 hr., 48 min.)
