Associate Professor of History, Judith Meyer will present “Voices from the Past: A Tale of Two French Communities” at 7pm on Friday, June 19 at our AF Center in Southbury. This presentation (in English) will take a close look at how and why the French city of La Rochelle became a bastion of French Protestantism in the 16th century, in order to shed light on the extraordinary appeal of the Reformation. Then a close look at the small town of Courthézon in the south of France in the early 17th century will offer insights into how the Protestant minority in the town managed to coexist with the majority Catholic populace and still uphold the integrity of their own faith.

Judith Meyer is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Connecticut at Waterbury. She is the author of a book, Reformation in La Rochelle: Tradition and Change in Early Modern Europe, 1500-1568, published in 1996, and several articles on La Rochelle. Her current research deals with the 17th-century consistory records in Courthézon in southern France (the consistory was the governing body of the local Calvinist church). Her article, “On the Front Lines of Co-existence: Courthézon’s Consistory in the Early 17th Century,” was published in early 2013. She is also interested in how women fared during the Reformation, and that is the subject of her most recent conference presentation, “Women and the Limits of Consistorial Discipline: The Case of Courthézon in the Early 17th Century.” She received her B.A. in history from Lawrence University and her Ph.D. in history from the University of Iowa.

Light refreshments will be served following the presentation. Admission is $10 (Free for AFNWCT Members). Reservations are kindly requested prior to June 18 by calling (203) 707-0710 or by sending checks to AFNWCT, 1 Pomperaug Office Park, Suite 301, Southbury, CT 06488 or paying by credit card below.

Here is a brief synopsis:

Le Testament Français   par Andreï Makine
Every summer young Andreï visits his grandmother, Charlotte Lemonnier, whom he loves dearly. In a dusty village overlooking the vast Russian steppes, she captivates him with wondrous tales – watching Proust play tennis in Neuilly, Tsar Nicholas II’s visit to Paris, French president Felix Faure dying in the arms of his mistress. But from his mysterious grandmother Andreï also learns of a Russia he has never known: a country of famine and misery, brutal injustice, and the hopeless chaos of war. Enthralled, he weaves her stories into his own secret universe of memory and dream. A poignant story of a Soviet boy’s ascent into adulthood in the 1960’s and 1970’s, the novel is an epic tale full of passion and tenderness, pain and heartbreak, mesmerizing in every way.

The Deadline is fast approaching for Program Advertisements and Donations in the form of products or gift certificates for our May 3 La Vie Parisienne fundraising event. During brunch at the Heritage Hotel in Southbury, guests will be transported to typical Parisian street scenes where they can have their “portraits” drawn in “Montmartre” by a professional caricaturist, browse and bid on items donated by our generous area businesses and members all while being entertained by a roaming professional mime.

As a cultural and educational non-profit organization, your donation will be used to support our mission and more specifically, our new French Language School opened in September 2014 in Southbury. We teach French classes to adults and children starting as young as 3 years old. Studies show that those who learn a second language tremendously improve their cognitive abilities.

More importantly for our business friends, our +140 members living in more than 30 communities in the northwestern region of Connecticut, are potential customers of area businesses. In addition to listing donations in our event Program, your business will be listed on our website.

Celebrate national poetry month with original poetry written by Brian Denyer. From humorous to inspirational poetry, this program begins with Brian’s verse response to the French classic poets (e.g. du Bellay, La Fontaine, Moliere) and will include his commentary on the poetic attitudes of the time period. Moving forward onto the more modern forms, Brian’s poetry will imitate the styles of Baudelaire and Paul Valery.  To conclude, participants will create an original group poem, in French. Hand-outs of the selected poetry using a parallel text translation will be available. This event is open to the public. Wine and a light dessert will be served.

RSVP by April 6 with check or credit card payment of $15 – $10 for members and Special Price for Students of AFNWCT Classes only $5!

Mes chers amis ,

(But we can always change our minds and, indeed, I received after our meeting a topic that would have been a good one to add to our list of possibilities:  La santé et la nutrition.)  I’ll keep a list of all our not-yet-used ideas for use as time goes by.  The goal, then, is really to have (and for each of us to prepare for) a conversational topic around which we can enjoy one another’s company and a conversation en français.

mercredi 25 mars:    Ma mauvaise/pire expérience – Jean
mercredi 1er avril:    Les farces du Poisson d’avril (April Fools’ jokes I have known)

….. Un gros merci!”
